Equalizer: Memories of Manon ASIN: 6302555191 Our Price: $39.98
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Bring back McCall! Comments: Oh, please release The Equalizer on DVD, complete seasons. It is an excellent show and I can't find it anywhere on TV anymore. I miss it a lot. "Manon" is a pretty good episode, but as others have stated here, not the series best. The show touted some excellent guest actors over it's run. Everyone should watch it if they get a chance. Fans of Woodward should check out the movie "Mister Johnson," with Pierce Brosnan.

Summary: A Terrific & Intelligent Spy Thriller & Love Story!
Comments: Like the other movies originating from the unchallenged master of the intelligent spy thriller John LeCarre, this one is a really a sophisticated thriller exposing the hidden, complicated, and conflicted corners of an individual's human heart. "The Russia House" represented a formidable new challenge for LeCarre, so suddenly deprived of the spy-thriller heaven of the cold war he had built his career describing. But here he has mined fresh new tunnels of insight into the cunning, deceit, and betrayal that is the stuff of real-life espionage. At the same time, this movie also weaves a quite memorable love story in the spaces squeezed between the two sides.
Barley Blair (Sean Connery), the failing boozehound scion of a collapsing British publishing house with a love for everything Russian, happens by drunken though eloquent happenstance to inspire a famous Soviet scientist into attempting to sneak his manuscript detailing the real sorry state of Russian ICBM capabilities into the hands of the West in order to foster a recognition of the folly of the arms race and to end what he calls "the great lie". The scientist attempts to contact Blair, but through a series of mishaps rivaling the deeds of the keystone cops winds up landing the manuscript in the hands of the British Secret Service. So they soon want Barley to intercede with the Russian contact point (Michelle Pfeiffer) to find out who the author of the manuscript is and thus determine its authenticity. So Barley pursues the beautiful but conflicted contact, an idealistic angel of mercy who soon sparks Barley's love interest and paternal concern. The game is afoot.
The movie is gorgeously photographed on a number of locations throughout Russia, and the travelogue-like tour through Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Minsk is spellbinding. Likewise, the acting is top notch, with Roy Scheider, James Fox, and a whole welter of distinguished British actors lending presence and gravity to this intelligent thriller. As is usual, the plot takes off slowly but builds to a mind-boggling series of intertwining activities one has to pay attention to understand. Before long we recognize the familiar murderous games set into motion with deadly earnest by the Brits, the Americans, and the Russians, none of whom give a rattler's damn about Barley, the contact, or the scientist.
This is a stunning, suspenseful, and somewhat rueful tale of what unfolds when we discover that there is a real possibility that the so-called Soviet ICBM threat is a sham, that the missiles cannot escape their silos, that their ability to achieve trajectory or destroy targets with any accuracy is vastly over-rated. And as one can expect from LeCarre's shadowy and complex geopolitical world of espionage and power, there are no simple answers or easy foregone conclusions. This is a wonderful movie, which in my opinion is quite under-rated. It has the ring of more real-life veracity and worldly wisdom than one can easily find on the non-fiction side of the movie theater aisle. Enjoy!

The Little Drummer Girl ASIN: 6302877903 Our Price: $14.99
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: It's one of my favorites! Comments: I think this is a great movie! Dianne Keaton and Yorgo Voyagis are outstanding! Also watch for David Suchet (Hercule Poirot)! The young actress (Keaton) is recruited for a dangerous secret mission. It is very realistic and exciting. I recommend it.

The Bourne Identity ASIN: B000077VT7 Our Price: $12.99
Customer's Rating: 1 Summary: Ah.. To Be Bourne Free Comments: Based on Robert Ludlum's best selling novel of the same name, the film adaptation, is not at all what I expected. I have not read the book, but I am familar with (and am a fan of) the film work of director Doug Liman, therefore I was rather interested to see how his first real action flick would turn out. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is rescued at sea by an Italian fishing boat, with a few bullets in his back, and unconscious. Once they are removed, he awakens, only to discover that he has lost his memory, and doesn't know who he is. As he tries to figure out the events that caused him to end up out at sea, he ends up in Switzerland, and is being pursued by assasins, who want him dead. As it turns out, he is an agent for the CIA, and once his boss,Conklin (Chris Cooper) discovers his whereabouts, he wants him back for his own reasons. On the run, Bourne enlists a reluctant (at first) woman, Marie (Franka Potente), to help him. He gives her lots of cash in exchange for her help. The pair eventually fall in love. I found the film to have its fair share of problems. The film is very slow to get started. It takes a good 35 minutes or more before anything really happens. The car chase in the film has been compared to that of the one featured in the FRENCH CONNECTION. Quite frankly, I didn't find the chase all that exciting or as ground-breaking as the one from "Connection", and I've seen better car stuff in many of the Bond films. As for the other stunts, here's one stunt involving a staircase that is rather inventive, that appears late in the movie but by then it's too late. I guess since his buddy Ben Affleck is the latest Jack Ryan, and the comic book hero Daredevil, Damon wanted to get in on the action, as well. I don't know if that was such a good idea. I had a hard time buying into the whole deal of Damon as an action star. Another problem that I had, was that there was little to no chemistry between Damon and Potente, and the "romance" is therefore flat. As far as the hand to hand fight sequences...this is another flick, that attempt to rip off THE MATRIX?? C'mon, these 2 films are like apples and oranges, so why even go that route anyway? The "Collector's Edition" DVD has a handful of so-so extras. The commentary track from director Doug Liman is pretty good. The 4 deleted scenes don't offer anything new to the film and were wisely left on the cutting room floor. The "exclusive" alternate ending is rather anti-climactic, and predictable. At least the theatrical ending has a bit more punch to it. The behind the scenes feturette is 14 minutes of "fluff" that is nothing more than an electronic press kit, better known as an EPK.. For those of you with a DVD-ROM drive on your PC, there are additional multimedia bonus materials on the disc, as part of Universal's Total Axcess program. More extras via TA are promised in the future. Production notes, filmographies, a Moby music video for his song "Extreme Ways" from the film's soundtrack, and the theatrical trailer round out the extras Slow to get going. the film goes nowhere, and fast. and the extras are ok...at best A major disappointment. The Bourne Identity DVD is only watchable if you have insomnia and need to catch up on some sleep. * and a half stars

The Bourne Identity (TV Miniseries) ASIN: 6302779286 Our Price: $14.95
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Bourne is a lot nicer than in the book. Comments: This is an intriguing movie and it will hold your attention from beginning to end. The plot is well conceived and there are no holes to drive trucks through. They could not have picked better actors for the characters. They may not match the descriptions in the book; but this is not a book. The Bourne in the movie is much nicer. You have to make allowances for the transformation to the screen. However he does a lot more borrowing instead of stealing and is not as vicious with people on his travels. Unlike the movie [Three Days of the Condor ASIN: 6300216748 (see my review September 25, 2000)], They did not let director distort the story for his own agenda. Basic story is someone wakes up with amnesia and naturally must find out who he is and why someone wants to kill him? As with all the amnesia stories he could be good, bad, or (I'm not going to say ugly) the person he is seeking.

American Roulette ASIN: 6301180712 Our Price: $9.99
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: A poet-president Comments: The film opens with an odd scene. Carlos Quintas (Andy Garcia), a Latin-American president living in exile, takes the night underground while dreams of his beloved, Kate (Kitty Aldridge). It's a good beggining for a promising story. The plot is clever, focusing on the strange relations between the superpowers (Great Britain, for instance), and the dictatorship of Carlos Quintas' country (any resemblance with all latin-american dictatorships in the 70's and 80's is not purely coincidental). There's good action and some pleasant moments, such as the poetry of the president (The verses belong, in fact, to chilean poet Pablo Neruda). The solution, however, is easy, even romantic, turning the film into any other "Casablanca" style. That's the reason this movie won't take 5. It deserves 3 stars, excellent for a cheap production.

Blunt: The Fourth Man ASIN: 6305522901 Our Price: $6.99
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Blunt for a nice evening Comments: This film was made for the BBC in 1985. Anthony Hopkins, good as usual, played a robust, outrageous camp charm, a curly-haired Guy Burgess in Robin Chapman's version of Anthony Blunt's subversive activities. Ian Richardson is the spy Blunt and Michael Williams is Goronwy Rees. This is not a must to see movie, but you can have a very pleasant evening with Hopkins.

Broken Arrow ASIN: 6304078250 Our Price: $9.98
Customer's Rating: 2 Summary: Hit and miss Comments: There is no doubt about Woo's ability to create searing over the top action, and he provides plenty of it in Broken Arrow but at times it comes off as extremely campy. I know, I know; it's just an action film, but I like to come out of an action movie thinking that I just watched something, no matter how unrealistic or unfeasible, with a plausible foundation. I in no way can see a rogue money hungry jet-fighter stealing nukes in real life. The stunts were teriffic and special effects were stunning, but this is where I felt the movie went over the top. Travolta's performance is so campy and cartoonish that it's like he's straight out of an Archie comic book. He doesn't "sell" me on any part of his character (most of this is the fault of the writers). I don't think a single stunt he pulls off is something I could see Travolta doing, which really hurt my enjoyment of the film. Bad lines, delivered by a decent actor, in a bad role = sub-par performance no matter what way you slice it. The DVD lacks punch on extras and in my opinion is of average sound and picture quality. If you buy action flicks for the audio features look for, or wait for a DTS version. If you are looking for a decent action DVD I'd steer you towards Blade, Matrix or U-571.

Brotherhood of the Rose ASIN: 6302224667 Our Price: $89.95
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Fantastic movie! Comments: I really hope that sometime soon they release this on DVD. The book by David Morrell "The Brotherhood Of The Rose" is my favorite book of all-time. As we all know, most adaptations of books don't go so well. This is a rare exception. This adaptation is 99% accurate. A change here or there, especially the ending, but still a great job. Read the book, then watch the movie...and then realize that I was right! ENJOY!

Company Business ASIN: 6302374650 Our Price: $14.95
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Enjoyable & great teaming Comments: Yes, this "Company Business" is a bit hokey and implausible, but I enjoyed it for the one time teaming of Gene Hackman with Mikhail Baryshnikov. Hackman is right in his element and delivers a solid performance. Baryshnikov is also quite good in one of the few if only film roles where he isn't a dancer. The plot isn't a total dud by any means and has a lot of twists and turns (even if you don't want to examine any of this too closely) along with a least one double-cross, which keeps it moving along and kept me guessing the outcome the first time I saw it. But hey, what James Bond plot is plausible either so I think this is a film you really tune in to see first and foremost because you like the stars and want to see the two of them. But if you don't like Hackman or Baryshnikov, then don't waste your time.

Condorman ASIN: 0764005529 Our Price: $9.99
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Fun but not very good Comments: I first saw this movie five years ago, as a preteen, with my father. We made jokes about what low-quality it was until I read a year ago that it stars Michael Crawford(Phantom of the Opera). It was still low quality (except the special effects, which are pretty good), but it is definitely worth it for Crawford fans. Crawford plays a cartoonist who, with an amazingly coincidental association with the CIA, acts out the exploits of his hero, Condorman. Not especially funny or thrilling, Condorman is a uniform mock-spy-thriller, with a good supporting cast but bad writing. Would probably be good for younger children (note the PG rating, though), and has gorgeous scenes in the Alps.

Falcon & The Snowman ASIN: 6303602266 Our Price: $29.99
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Christopher Boyce Comments: I enjoyed this movie immensely. It was fairly true to life and very well done. Hutton and Penn are terrific and Schlesinger does an excellent job in directing. For those of you that are curious, Christopher Boyce will be released from a halfway house in San Francisco on March 15, 2003. He will be paroled after 25 years in prison, including spending time in SuperMax in Colorado, alongside Oklahoma City bombers Timothy J. McVeigh and Terry L. Nichols, and the Unabomber, Theodore J. Kaczynski. (Information taken from the LA Times story "The Falcon and the Fallout" by Richard A. Serrano, published March 2, 2003.)

Comments: I am from Tbilisi, Georgian Republic and purchase many items from the Amazon! This title was in my first purchases and I would highly recommend this set to everyone who is collecting materials like this and this is another example of openness in the United States. You will never see this kind of movie about secret details of the other countries. You will 'attend' how the several Presidents were assassinated or happened to be the targets of the assassination attempts. There is a great chance to get the movie online, so do not delay, get the movie right now and you will enjoy it. My friends very often visit me to watch the entire set and they get astonished by what they see.

Our Price: $24.95
Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Better than I remembered!
Comments: Many years ago I had the pleasure of seeing this filmed stage play on PBS and am delighted to see it was finally released on video. Based on the William Gillette play, this Civil War spy story features (VERY young) John Lithgow, Meryl Streep, and Charles Kimbrough (best known for his work in 'Murphy Brown') in the lead roles. (Look quickly for Jeffrey Jones of 'Ferris Buller' fame in a bit as a Southern soldier.) Lithgow is especially wonderful as the Northern spy passing for Southern officer who loves Southern belle, Streep, but cannot (or can he/) let that interfere with his work. Kimbrough plays the rather smarmy suitor to Streep with great panache. The old-fashioned plot offers no surprises, but just sit back and enjoy. I think you'll find this one is worth it.
